Mortgage Division Controller – Franklin, TN

We are currently seeking a Mortgage Division Controller in Franklin, TN. This presents an excellent opportunity for a motivated professional to work in a challenging and rewarding environment. This exempt position reports to the Chief Accounting Officer.



The Mortgage Division Controller is responsible for ensuring all financial information produced by the department is accurate, timely, complete and prepared in accordance with guidance promulgated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Financial Accounting Standards Board, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and all other relevant regulatory and advisory organizations.


  • Serves as finance and accounting subject matter expert for Mortgage Division leadership team and staff
  • Monitors the accuracy and completeness of Mortgage Division financial transactions
  • Works with Mortgage SVP, Senior Operations Officer to prepare financial forecasts and management reports/analysis as requested
  • Works on special projects for the Mortgage Division and provides financial impact analysis and risk assessments where needed
  • Provides day-to-day oversight of Mortgage Division general ledger including reviewing transactions for appropriateness
  • Serves as backup for Business Analyst who prepares commission and compensation reports from the Mortgage Division for payroll processing
  • Works with all consultants on management reporting exclusive to the Mortgage Division to ensure project efficiency and to help SVP, SOO with oversight and cost-effective workflow
  • Responsible for timely and accurate completion of financial close for Mortgage Division
  • Ensures timely and accurate completion of all mortgage-related footnotes or other financial disclosures required for regulatory filings and financial reporting.
  • Assists CAO in developing and maintaining accounting policy for Mortgage Division (SEC, FDIC and FRB)
  • Serves as Mortgage Division’s primary point of contact during external audits and regulatory exams
  • Build positive working relationships to understand and meet the needs of Bank and Mortgage Division departments
  • Monitors and challenges the processes and functions performed by department personnel to ensure that industry best practices are being followed and that technology is leveraged where appropriate to create efficiencies and to increase effectiveness of team
  • Attends and participates in appropriate key leadership meetings as needed
  • Researches complex accounting topics and provides guidance regarding proper accounting for more complex transactions
  • Coordinates with Risk, External Audit and department personnel to ensure that an effective system of internal controls is in place at Mortgage Division and functioning effectively for all financial reporting processes
  • Understands and complies with all regulatory requirements promulgated by relevant bank and mortgage supervisory agencies, including those for consumer protection and the Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering Program
  • Promotes the bank’s products and services whenever possible; participates in bank sponsored events, networking and volunteer opportunities at every opportunity

  • College Degree in Accounting; MBA and/or CPA preferred
  • Minimum five or more years of mortgage industry experience preferred
  • Comprehensive understanding of SEC and FASB requirements related to Mortgage Division
  • Ability to research and provide guidance on complying with complex accounting treatments
  • Proficiency in MS Office, accounting software, and database structures
  • Proven ability to work well with employees at all levels, train and motivate department staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively through writing, speaking and listening
  • Uses strong persuasive skills in positive or negative situations, demonstrates group presentation skills and conducts productive meetings
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment
  • Strong analytical skills – ability to synthesize complex and diverse information
